If I want to add more LEDs, can I?

Sure. This light kit is based on our LOW PROFILE LED LIGHT strips. As long as you have enough battery power to support the load, you caq always add more.

Are these difficult to install?

This is a subjective question. Depends on the person. Not everyone has the same skills and abilities. What's easy to one person isn't to another. What we can tell you that as lighting installations go, these are pretty basic. Of course you need to have an understanding of 12vdc power but on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the most difficult), these are about a 2 or 3. If you're not sure you want to tackle the installation, we urge you to download our INSTALLATION DOCUMENTS first so you have an opportunity to assess whether its something you want to do or if you need assistance. Our installation documentation is quite extensive - including photos. You can click on the INSTALL INFO navigation tab on this product page too for more about the installation process.

How are these LEDs powered?

Boogey Lights® LEDs are 12vdc devices. They require 12vdc power. The single color LEDs however will accept 18vdc power. We mention this because some Jr. Dragster customers like to use common power tool 18vdc power packs to power our LEDs on their dragster. The LEDs will burn brighter and run hotter (not last as long either) so you'll need to be mindful of heat build up and amperage draw if you're going to run 18vdc. Scroll down and expand the section titled POWER CONSIDERATIONS for more on this topic including Amperage Data.

Is this light kit available in a color changing, multi-color version?

This light kit is offered in single color versions only. While it's certainly possible to build a multi-color version, doing so requires the addition of an LED controller which adds more complexity, more room is needed, an additional component to wire into the system and costs more. We intentionally built this light kit to be simple, easy to install and use. If you're interested in building out a multi-color capable version of this light kit, reach out to us and we'll be happy to assist you. It's not difficult.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

BOOGEY LIGHTS® Low Profile LED strips are impressively bright. Built with two ounce copper PCB, the brightest tri-chip 5050 LEDs available and 1.2mm of genuine 3M® VHB double sided tape, these LED strips are made tough for use outdoors on vehicles and other motor sports applications. The LEDs are completely sealed against the elements. They're IP65 rated. They are heat resistant, waterproof and easily cleaned for maintenance free operation. The soft, gel-like strips provide maximum flexibility and a clean and sleek appearance. Their low profile design makes them easy to fit into tight spaces and yet are incredibly bright; nothing brighter on the market.

  • Available in RED, GREEN, BLUE, ORANGE, AMBER, WHITE (6500K), MAGENTA and PINK.
  • Each LED strip has a single 10' long power lead sealed and hard wired to one end. The other end is sealed.
  • The LED strip can be cut every 3 LEDs if needed (details included with the kit).
  • The LED strip is 3/8" wide x 1/8" high. The length varies based on configuration chosen.
  • 12VDC LEDs capable of handling up to 18VDC (see power considerations note below).
  • Kit includes 3M Adhesion Primer to ensure proper adhesion (the LED strip will NOT fall off if you use this - see details below).
  • Multiple configuration options to fit any Jr. Dragster frame structure (see diagrams).
  • Eight possible Under-Glow configurations (see configuration info below).
  • Two possible Under-Wing configurations (see configuration info below).
  • If you want to expand or add-to the kit, you can using this LOW PROFILE LED STRIP product.

CONFIGURATION OPTIONS: UNDER-GLOW

We offer eight different UNDER-GLOW configuration options to fit just about any frame structure. Keep in mind that these LED strips need to be mounted on a smooth, flat, straight surface (they can't bend around corners or bend on a horizontal plane) so it's important to select the configuration that matches your frame structure. Notice too we include some diagrams of these frame structures below. Here are the options offered in this kit:

  • Two - 35.5" LED strips. This is the default. The strips are typically mounted under the foot pan. One on each side of the dragster.
  • Four - 35.5" LED strips. Designed to provide full under-glow coverage under the foot pan and forward. Two 3' LED strips per side.
  • Four - 47.25" LED strips. Designed to provide full under-glow coverage under the foot pan and forward. Two 4' LED strips per side.
  • Two - 35.5" LED strips PLUS Two - 47.25" LED strips. Designed to provide full under-glow coverage under the foot pan and forward using a mix of 3' and 4' LED strips.
  • One - 35.5" LED strip PLUS Two - 47.25" LED strips. Designed to provide full under-glow coverage under the foot pan and forward for frames that have a single forward frame tube for a mounting location. See diagram.
  • Two - 70.5" LED strips. Designed to provide full under-glow coverage for frames where a single 6' LED strip can be mounted on each side.
  • Two - 84.75" LED strips. Designed to provide full under-glow coverage for frames where a single 7' LED strip can be mounted on each side.
  • Two - 94.5" LED strips. Designed to provide full under-glow coverage for frames where a single 8' LED strip can be mounted on each side.

CONFIGURATION OPTIONS: UNDER-WING

We offer two different UNDER-WING configuration options as follows:

  • Two - 11.75" LED strips. This is the default. The strips are typically used for wings that have a single center support strut with one 12" strip mounted under the wing on each side of the strut.
  • One - 23.5" LED strip. If your wing has two support struts and there's room under the wing to mount a single 24" LED strip this might be better.

SWITCHING OPTIONS

You'll need some type of switch to turn the LEDs on and off. We offer a toggle and push-button switch as a convenience to customers however any DC 5amp rated switch will work.

POWER CONSIDERATIONS

Boogey Lights® LEDs are 12vdc devices. They require 12vdc power. The LEDs however will accept 18vdc power. We mention this because some Jr. Dragster customers like to use common power tool 18vdc power packs to power our LEDs on their dragster. 3M ADHESION PRIMER IS REQUIRED

To achieve the full adhesive strength of the 3M® tape affixed to the back of each strip 3M® Adhesion Promoter (aka Primer) must be applied to the mounting surface first. This is an important step to ensure a secure bond. The 3M® Adhesion Promoter creates a chemical bond between the tape and the mounting surface such that the LED strip will stay stuck (at least until you decide you want to remove it). Using any other solvent such as rubbing alcohol or acetone is not the same thing as using 3M® Adhesion Promoter. While these solvents will help clean the surface, they do not prime the surface. There is a difference. 3M® Adhesion Promoter is included with this light kit.  If however you wish to purchase more, it can also be purchased separately on our website in one ounce, two ounce and four ounce bottles.

OTHER ITEMS YOU MAY NEED

No two installation scenarios are the same. Not everyone shares the same installation quality goals. Some folks are OK with twisting wires together, others want to solder them. Some folks are OK with running wires where they may be seen or unprotected to save money/time, others want a tidy, clean install without any wires showing. Some folks are OK with mounting their LED strips to whatever surface they can find, others want to take the time necessary to build out appropriate mounting surfaces to provide the best lighting effect on their vehicle. The point is it's not possible to provide all the materials necessary for all installation scenarios and quality goals. Our light kits provide the essential components needed for a high-quality, functioning lighting system. Installation of our light kit to your specific vehicle may however require additional items to make it look and fit the way you want. This is particularly the case with electrical wiring and mounting of LED strips. Before proceeding with your installation we suggest you consider THESE OTHER ITEMS.

Installation Information

IMPORTANT. You must have an understanding of 12vdc power. An essential skill with installation of any Boogey Lights LED products is knowing how to correctly wire the product to a 12vdc circuit. This includes understanding the importance of having a properly sized fuse at the power source, polarity, how to properly seal an electrical connection, using properly sized wire gauge for the load, measuring voltage and measuring the additional amperage draw you're adding. If you are uncertain or unfamiliar with any of these concepts, we urge you to ask someone who has the knowledge to assist you. Electricity is unforgiving.

Using 3M Adhesion Primer

Bench Testing

Before shipping, we tested the lights and controller in your order to make sure they work.  We strongly suggest bench testing the lights and controller before installing.   Doing so will also help you understand the wiring setup.  For shorter LED strips (under 300 leds), you can typically use a common 9vdc battery to test your lights if you don't have a 12vdc bench testing power source available.  The lights of course won't be as bright but it is an easy way to test your lights before installing.
