READ THIS BEFORE ORDERING!

Our advanced lighting systems offer extensive customization and features - more than any other lighting system - so understanding the details is key to getting the results you want. Please take a moment to read this entire product page, starting with the FAQs below and continuing through all sections. Be sure to also check the INSTALL tab for downloadable installation documentation and wiring diagrams. These contain critical pre-purchase and setup information you need to review upfront.

Successful, safe installation requires reading the written installation directions. While our How-To Videos offer helpful overviews, they do not replace the detailed documentation. Reading the instructions carefully is essential for proper fit, function, and long-term performance. Most support calls and warranty claims we receive stem from customers who don't read this information. Please take our advice and read the directions. We promise, you'll be happy with the results if you do.

FAQS | Frequently Asked Questions

While we encourage you to read all of the information presented on this product page (including the information on the navigation tabs), below are some of the most frequently asked questions we get about this product. In all cases, the answers to these FAQs will refer you to other sections of this product page for more details on the topic.

Do I really need to read the installation instructions?

Whether or not you read the installation instructions is up to you. What we can tell you is the vast majority of folks who have problems with this product are those who ignore our strong suggestions to read both the product details presented on this product page as well as the installation instructions before proceeding. Of course, they're also the same folks who, when the product fails or doesn't operate as they thought it should, are the first to complain. Simply put, if you're going to purchase this product we urge you to read and follow the directions. You'll be happy you did.

Do I need an LED Controller to operate?

No. Single color white LEDs only need an on/off switch to operate. You can of course purchase a controller that will provide additional functionality (eg wireless on/off but ultimately a simple switch is all that's needed to turn them on and off.

Do you offer other colors than 6000 kelvin bright white?

Yes! If you're looking for other color temperatures of white or even multi-color LEDs (e.g. RGB, RGBW, RGBA), use our LOW PROFILE LED STRIP product. It uses the exact same technology -- just a different LED chip color configuration.

Where can I find information on how to install this Low Profile LED Strip?

Click on the NAVIGATION tab titled, 'INSTALL INFO'. You'll find detailed installation documentation for this product including how to prepare the mounting surface, what you need to know before mounting your LED strips, how to install the strip, how to cut the strip if needed, how to bench test and more. All of this information is in a downloadable format as well. It's quite detailed. We urge customers to take the time to read this information before making their purchase decision so they know exactly what's involved. No surprises.

Where can I find amperage data for this product?

Appropriately sizing the components in your lighting system is critical. Making sure your lighting system doesn't exceed the amperage ratings of each individual component is absolutely essential. While LED lights are more energy efficient than incandescent or fluorescent, Boogey Lights® LEDs are super-bright. As such, they will draw more amperage than any other LED product on the market by a factor of 2 or 3. Sometimes more. You'll notice when ordering this product we provide the # OF LEDS along with the length of the LED strip. We do so to make it easier to calculate the approximate amperage of each strip. DO NOT IGNORE THIS INFORMATION when designing your lighting system. You can click on the SPECS navigation tab of this product page and then read the section titled, 'AMPERAGE DATA'. It's quite detailed.

Why would I want to mount these inside of an Aluminum Channel?

Lots of reasons. One of the main reasons is the LED Strip is going to be mounted in a location that needs protection from accidental damage (such as tools bouncing around inside the box). Also, another reason is in situations where the LED strip will be mounted in a location that is in full view all the time. Mounting the LED strip inside an aluminum channel + diffuser on top 'dresses up' the installation considerably. More professional looking.

How is the Aluminum Channel mounted to the toolbox lid?

If you order the optional Aluminum Channel, we include 3M VHB tape and 3M Adhesion Primer which secures the channel to the toolbox lid. Then, the LED strip fits inside that channel with the included plastic opaque diffuser snapping in on top.

How does the magnetic reed proximity switch work?

This is a switch that is activated by a magnet (the magnet can be mounted either on the toolbox lid or the toolbox housing itself - totally up to you). We include a photo of the switch in the photo carousel of this product page. It has two pieces. The switch itself and a magnetic. The switch simply breaks the flow of the 12vdc+ electricity going to the lights which turns them on/off. It is designed to be installed in-line with the 12vdc + circuit that powers the lights. If you purchase the optional magnetic reed proximity switch, we include a relay which absolutely must be used. The amperage rating of the magnetic switch is only .86 amps so the relay is required. We include a wiring diagram of this proximity switch with relay in the photo carousel of this product page as well as in the installation information so you can see how it's wired. Most installations will use the NORMALLY OPEN connections. Normally Open = electricity is flowing when the magnet is NOT near the switch. This is the position most installs will use as electricity is flowing to the lights when the toolbox lid is open.

Can I order longer Power Lead lengths?

This product's power lead is offered in four different lengths: 3' (default), 5', 10' and 15'. If you need a length that's shorter than any of these options, order the longer length and simply cut the cable to whatever you need. Problem solved. The power lead wire gauge is 22AWG and is hard wired to one end of the LED Strip. There are no connectors - ever. If you need to go longer than 15', we suggest using 18AWG cable ( POWER LEAD WIRE ) to extend where needed versus using longer runs of 22AWG. 18AWG is thicker which means the voltage drop won't impact brightness for distances under 50'. Plus, resistance is lower so amperage can be increased. If you're confused on these concepts, we urge you to seek assistance from someone who can help you with designing your lighting system. Wire gauge selection, wire lengths, amperage draw and power source voltage/amperage/charging rates are important considerations when designing your lighting system to make sure they're safely installed.

Note: If you order any of the optional switches, we include 25' of 18AWG 2 conductor power lead wire (along with fuse holder and battery connection cable) to complete the installation. You can of course also purchase 18AWG wire locally. It's readily available.

Will one LED strip provide enough light for the inside of my toolbox?

We think so, yes! For most pickup truck toolbox lighting applications, one LED strip is all you need. Take a look at some of the photos or the video below showing how bright these lights are. Hard to imagine why anyone would need more strips. That said, if you really want to add more LED strips, just order multiple kits.

What is your Return Policy for this product?

This product is considered a custom ordered product which can only be returned for a STORE CREDIT (not a refund). You can find our RETURN POLICY here.

Where can I find the specifications for this product?

Click on the SPECS navigation tab on this product page. The GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION and LOW PROFILE LED STRIPS sections are the most relevant to this product. There are however other sections on this page that are important as well. Our product documentation - including specifications - are quite detailed. We urge customers to take the time to review this information before making their purchase decision.

Will the 3M VHB TAPE hold this LED Strip in place?

If you follow our installation instructions - including the proper preparation of the mounting surface with 3M Adhesion Primer - YES this LED Strip will absolutely stay stuck. But you have to read the installation instructions. Scroll down and read the section titled, '3M ADHESION PRIMER IS REQUIRED' for information on this. We also suggest downloading the installation documentation so you can see exactly what's involved in terms of installation before making your purchase decision.

Do you have photos of what the various LED colors look like when lit?

Absolutely! You can find LED color photos by scrolling down this product page and reviewing the section title, 'WHAT LED COLORS LOOK LIKE'. You'll also find this information on the SPECS navigation tab of this product page.

One word of caution. Truth is, it's not possible to accurately describe what a specific LED color looks like or take a picture of it. Why? Because there are a number of factors that impact how a particular LED color appears to the human eye. For starters, it's important to understand that Boogey Lights® are accent lights. With only a few exceptions, our lighting systems are designed to be hidden from view. When installed properly, you'll never see the LED diodes/lighting fixtures themselves. You'll only see the glow reflecting off the surrounding surfaces coming from the LEDs. That means the color of the surface the LEDs are mounted to coupled with the color of the surfaces surrounding the LEDs will directly impact how the human eye perceives the color being reflected. A white surface for example will tend to brighten the color whereas a darker surface will tend to darken the color. Real word scenario: If the LEDs are shining downward on black pavement, the light reflecting off that black pavement will appear different than if on concrete which is a lighter material So for example, the LED color green will tend to look more like a "light green" when shining off of lighter color surfaces and more like a "dark green" when shining off of darker color surfaces. Same LEDs, same diodes but the human eye perceives the color reflected differently based on the color of the surrounding reflective surfaces.

When in doubt, dry mount. If you are looking for a specific color or are very picky about the LED color look you're trying to achieve, we strongly suggest dry mounting the LED strip in the location you're looking to light up and then powering up that strip temporarily with a 12vdc power source. That way you can see how the glow looks for your specific lighting product before committing to a specific LED color. It's really the only way to know how the light will appear.

Do you have LUMENS data for this product?

While LUMENS are not an accurate measurement of LED strip lighting brightness (especially multi-color), these BRIGHT WHITE 6000k LED Low Profile LED strips on full power brightness provide at least 450 lumens per foot at 12.5vdc power input. If your power source is hotter (e.g. 13vdc - 13.5vdc), that lumens number jumps to ~ 540 lumens per foot. If you're concerned about brightness, rest assured you won't find a brighter LED strip designed for use on motor vehicles. We have yet to have a customer tell us the LEDs aren't bright enough. In fact, most have to dim them. When in doubt, we urge customers to dry mount the LED strip and power them up to see how bright they are. If they're not bright enough for your lighting application, return them for a refund in accordance with our refund policy.

What is Priority Processing?

If the product configuration you're purchasing is eligible for PRIORITY PROCESSING, you can select 'YES' (default is 'NO') and your order will be given priority in our build queue such that we'll build and ship your order using the shipping method you selected at checkout within TWO business days (or less) regardless of what the current build time estimate states. There are limitations on this so be sure to scroll down and read the section titled 'What is Priority Processing?' further down on this product page.

Videos

A couple of short videos showing the toolbox light strip in action. This installation uses the optional magnetic proximity reed switch (w/relay) to automatically turn the light on/off. Also, the LED strip is mounted inside the aluminum channel with plastic diffuser on top.

Product Highlights

BOOGEY LIGHTS® Bright White 6000K Low Profile LED strips are impressively bright. Built with two ounce copper PCB, the brightest 5050 LEDs available and 1.2mm of genuine 3M® VHB double sided tape, these LED strips are made tough for use both indoors and outdoors. The LEDs are completely sealed against the elements. They're IP65 rated. They are heat resistant, waterproof and easily cleaned for maintenance free operation. The soft, gel-like strips provide maximum flexibility and a clean and sleek appearance. Their low profile design makes them easy to fit into tight spaces and yet are incredibly bright; nothing brighter on the market.

This toolbox light kit can be ordered in lengths ranging from 18.75" to 69" - which will work for just about any pickup truck toolbox. The default configuration has one 36" power lead hard wired and sealed to one end of the strip. The other end is sealed. If needed, the LED strips can be cut every 3 LEDs although we encourage you to order the length you need. See details on how to cut our LOW PROFILE LED strips here. If you want longer power leads, we offer additional power lead length options.

Power Lead Length Options: This product's power lead wire if offered in the following lengths: 3' (default), 5', 10' and 15'. Power lead wire gauge is 22AWG. The power lead wire outer jacket is GREY. If you need to go longer than 15' on the power lead we suggest using 18AWG cable ( POWER LEAD WIRE ) to extend where needed. 18AWG is thicker which means the voltage drop won't impact brightness for distances under 50'. Plus, resistance is lower so amperage can be increased. If you're confused on these concepts, we urge you to seek assistance from someone who can help you with designing your lighting system. Wire gauge selection, wire lengths, amperage draw and power source voltage/amperage/charging rates are important considerations when designing your lighting system. NOTE: There are NO CONNECTORS on these power leads. Each power lead has bare wire on the other end (2, 4, 5 or 6 conductors depending on the product). All connections are hard wired. This is by design.

For toolbox lighting, we suggest mounting the LED strip inside Aluminum Channel with Opaque Plastic Diffuser. It not only looks more professional, it protects the LED strip from damage. Scroll down on this product page for details on this mounting solution. Note that you may need to cut the aluminum channel and diffuser to fit your application. The channel provided will be longer than your LED strip.

Single color LEDs can be turned on/off using any 12vdc rated switch that's capable of handling the amperage in the circuit. You can of course provide your own 12vdc switching if you'd like. Or, if you're looking for switching options, scroll down and expand the section titled, 'SWITCHING OPTIONS'.

RETURN POLICY EXCEPTION. This product is considered to be a custom product. We build these LED strips to the lengths/colors you specify in the order. It is not eligible to be returned for a refund. STORE CREDIT only. Be sure to read our RETURN POLICY for details.

Switching Options

Single color LEDs can be turned on/off using any 12vdc rated switch available at just about any hardware store, auto parts store, big box store or online. We also offer the following switching options which can be added to the product configuration (see SWITCHING) or, you can purchase separately. Photos of all switching options are available in the product photo carousel.

If you purchase any of the above switching devices, we include 25' of 18AWG 2 conductor wire, a fuse holder and battery hookup wire (black + red).

3M Adhesion Primer is Required

To achieve the full adhesive strength of the 3M® tape affixed to the back of each strip 3M® Adhesion Promoter (aka Primer) must be applied to the mounting surface first. This is an important step to ensure a secure bond. The 3M® Adhesion Promoter creates a chemical bond between the tape and the mounting surface such that the LED strip will stay stuck (at least until you decide you want to remove it). Using any other solvent such as rubbing alcohol or acetone is not the same thing as using 3M® Adhesion Promoter. While these solvents will help clean the surface, they do not prime the surface. There is a difference. 3M® Adhesion Promoter IS INCLUDED with this light kit.   3M Adhesion Primer can also be purchased separately on our website in one ounce, two ounce and four ounce bottles. You can also purchase it locally at most any auto body shop, auto parts store or even online.

Aluminum Channel + Plastic Diffuser

We offer the option of purchasing aluminum channel + plastic diffuser for mounting the LED strip to the toolbox lid. To be clear, it's optional. You do not have to buy it. You can mount the LED STRIP directly to the bottom of the toolbox lid if you'd like. In our experience however, the likelihood that the LED strip will be damaged increases significantly if the strip isn't mounted inside the aluminum channel first. It ultimately depends on how much "stuff" you have in your toolbox. Not only does the aluminum channel and diffuser protect the LED strip the opaque plastic diffuser gives off a nice glow lighting effect too. The Mini T12 Aluminum Channel is a low profile design that can be mounted just about anywhere. It has an anodized finish (electrostatic sprayed) which provides maximum protection against the elements. They're ideal for harsh indoor or outdoor use to protect the LEDs. The channel can be mounted any number of ways including adhesive tape, rivets or screws. For this application, we use the included 3M VHB tape + 3M Adhesion Primer to mount the channel to the toolbox lid. Then, the LOW PROFILE LED strips fit nicely into the channel using the 3M tape already affixed to the back of Boogey Lights® LED strip. The diffuser completes the installation by snapping into the channel. While we offer the option to add the aluminum channel in the product configuration, you can purchase it separately here: ALUMINUM CHANNEL with PLASTIC DIFFUSER.

White LEDs: 6000K, 4000K or 2400k (2500K)?

Color temperature is a method of describing the color characteristics - warmth or coolness - of a white light source. Commonly referred to as the Correlated Color Temperature (CCT), it's a gauge of how yellow or blue a white light source appears to the human eye. The spectrum of color temperature is assigned a numerical value, measured in degrees of Kelvin (K), on a scale of 1,000 to 10,000. Most Kelvin temperatures for modern lighting applications however fall somewhere on a scale of 2000K to 6500K. The color temperature of a light source lets us know what the look and feel of the light produced will be.

We offer three different Kelvin temperatures of WHITE as follows: COOL WHITE (6000K), SOFT WHITE (2400K-2500K) and NATURAL WHITE (4000K).

Cool White (aka Bright White) is the most popular and is by default what we ship the most. It's also the color of white that is created with RGB LEDs (mixing equal parts red + green + blue = cool white). It's excellent for functional lighting and is used the world over in offices, public places, warehouses and the like.

Soft White (aka Warm White or Candle White) is the second most popular since it provides a nice contrast to the Cool White. It's on the opposite end of the Kelvin scale in the 2400K - 2500K temperature range. Soft White has a yellowish tint to it making it softer; easier on the eyes - not nearly as bright as Cool White though. It's great for creating ambiance but not functional lighting. You'll notice we offer an RGBW product that includes RGB + one diode of this soft white color which provides both Cool White and Soft White options (along with RGB of course). It's our most popular Multi-Color LED strip for this reason.

Lastly, we offer a Natural White (aka Neutral White) which has a Kelvin temp of 4000. This shade of white is middle of the road - half way between Soft White and Cool White. We offer it in a single color only. See below images to help demonstrate the differences.

What LED Colors Look Like

Customers will often ask us to describe what a particular LED color looks like. Truth is, it's not possible to accurately describe what a specific LED color looks like. That way you can see how the glow looks for your specific lighting product before committing to a specific LED color. It's really the only way to know how the light will appear.

A Word of Caution. The below photos are of our LEDs when viewed directly. With a rare exception, these LEDs will never be used in this manner. They're almost always mounted in such a way that you'll only see the glow from the LEDs reflecting off another surface. Keep this in mind when viewing the below photos.

The Problem with Photographing LEDs. It's not possible to capture LED color hues and brightness levels with a digital camera and then accurately reproduce those colors in a photograph the way the human eye sees and the brain interprets those same colors in person. To show a more accurate color hue, the brightness levels of the photos below have been severally restricted. In person, the light coming from these LED strips will appear significantly brighter to the point at which you should not look at them directly.

Return Policy

This product is considered a custom ordered product which may not be eligible to be returned - or if so, subject to additional fees and/or restrictions. Be sure to read our RETURN POLICY for details.

What is Priority Processing?

If the product configuration you're purchasing is eligible for PRIORITY PROCESSING, you can select 'YES' (default is 'NO') and your order will be given priority in our build queue such that we'll build and ship your order using the shipping method you select at checkout within TWO business days (or less) regardless of what the current build time estimate states. You can read more about our BUILD TIME ESTIMATE here.

Business Day Note: The 'Business Day' cut off time is NOON Eastern. If for example you place your order before noon on Monday, we'll build and ship your order no later than Wednesday. If you place that same order after 12 noon eastern on Monday, we'll build and ship your order no later than Thursday. If for some reason we're unable to do this (e.g. out of stock item or some other limitation), we'll reach out to you via email to ask how you want to proceed: Either cancel the order or ship the order normally and refund the Priority Processing fee paid.

Be aware that not all product configurations are eligible for Priority Processing. For example, if your light kit has an LED CONTROL CENTER in it, we do not offer Priority Processing on that order. Also, we exclude high demand lighting components that are often purchased in bulk by commercial accounts (eg. RED 75 Heavy Duty LED strips).

Priority Processing is offered per line item, not per order. If your order has multiple LED light kits or LED strip components on it, only those products that are eligible for Priority Processing (and selected as YES) will be shipped within the two business day time frame. Any remaining light kit products will be shipped via ground per our normal build time estimate. If your order has other non-LED components on it (e.g. controllers, switches, replacement parts, wire, 3M primer, etc), we will ship them with the priority processing item.

Does this mean that orders placed ahead of mine are being pushed back?

Absolutely not. The Priority Processing fees we collect allow us to pay the higher costs associated with using after-hours personnel to build light kits to meet the two business day time constraint.

If I upgrade my shipping to 2 day or overnight, does this speed up the build time?

No. Upgrading your shipping service speeds up the time it takes for your order to arrive once it is built and leaves our facility. Upgrading the shipping method has no bearing on the build queue processing time. For example, if regular ground shipping is 5 days, you can upgrade your shipping method to Next Day, Two Day or even Three Day so the order arrives at your location faster.
